Magenta
Emerging from the world that ‘Prog Rock’ left behind is Magenta. Originally, the two founding members, keyboardist Rob Reed and vocalist Christina Booth were the short-lived duo “Trippa” before metamorphosisizing in to what is now ‘Magenta, around 2001. Unabashedly drawing from the ‘70’s unparalleled crop of nerds with primitive synthesizers, the pair both contributed material to Reeds early band ‘Cyan’. The majority of the bands lyrical and conceptual influence is written by Steve Reed. “Magenta” germinated in earnest with a debut concept album in 2001 “Revolutions”. In a fashion typical to Magnum Opus’ of yore, the two CD set is comprised of only seven songs. By this point, the pair had added sidemen to fill out their sound. A pair of guitarists, Chris Fry and Martin Rossen (what “Prog” band worth its’ salt wouldn’t have two guitarists?) along with Percussionist Tim Robinson and bass player Unhurried, introspective, and deliberate, the songs epitomize the values of the likes of early Genesis, Yes, and Mike Oldfield. Predictably, fans had to wait three years for a follow up. This appeared in the form of “Seven” in 2004. Less bombastic then the debut, it met with a much bigger response than expected, and the initial pressings sold out within weeks .During this time Robinson bows out, and is replaced by Alan Mason-Jones. He joins the group in time to record the non album single, “Broken”. It incorporated a contemporary sound in a distinctly “Prog” format. It was shorter, and therefore more readily accessible than any of their album tracks. Within eight months, a live album “Another Time, Another Place” was released. It consisted of chosen tracks from three years of touring Europe. It was accompanied by a DVD, titled “The Gathering” the following year. The band continued to tour in its wake. Another concept album (were we to expect anything else?) was released in the summer of 2006. This time ala the ’70 band “Renaissance”, ‘Home’ detailed an English girl’s immigration to the States. It, as is predecessors, is drenched in more pretentious trappings than you can shake a Moog at. In fact, two versions of the album had to be released the album “New York Suite” included material that couldn’t fit on the initial release. This year’s offering, “Magenta: The Singles” featured rerecording of highlights of the bands previous discography. Few bands can readily equate their sound with influences so grounded squarely in the fashion that was to some degree prevalent 30 years ago. How many bands, for instance, site disco as a primary influence? Given the fact that Prog Rock per se was mainly the bastion of the pimple-faced geeks, and aging hipsters, it is actually satisfying to a degree that the many evening spent stoned on cheap pot waxing philosophical over Jon Anderson’s lyrics may not have been a complete waste of time. If you were ever to wonder what a world without punk may have sounded like, this is your chance.
