Okay, be honest: Who said there weren’t enough Suicide Commando clones? You? Or you? Bueller? For those of you who thought Suicide Commando took things just a tad too serious and Zombie Girl would be better as Zombie Boy, there’s God Module—a strange combination of Combichrist and Placebo or maybe Hocico and The Cure. And
Germany eats it up. Formed in
Orlando,
FL and relocated to
Seattle,
WA, God Module has played numerous festivals and tours where David Hasselhoff is king. Who can blame them for loving a band who released a cover of The Cure’s “A Night Like This,” which was in desperate need of another tribute?
To be fair, God Module does have two saving graces. The first is the smirk they must wear when writing songs. The twinge of campy zombie themes and the self-description of “spooky dance music” take them a step ahead of those countless bands who think distorted male vocals are a right, not just a privilege. The other is Courtney Bangert, who provides some vocals and live keyboards. Listen to “Corpses (A Zombie Love Song)” off God Mod’s latest release Let’s Go Dark and you’ll hear a voice that’s tinged with nigh-Siouxsie goth influence. Jasyn Bangert’s typical style of monotonous distortion actually compliment the song, producing something akin to Zombie Girl but heavier than anything Sebastian R. Komor could dream of. God Module’s site (http://www.godmodule.org/) is horribly outdated, but current information about the band—including the April 2007 Let’s Go Dark release—can be found at http://vampirefreaks.com/vorhees or http://www.myspace.com/godmodule.
