Every month as I open my assignment folder I have prepared myself for the proverbial Jack in the Box surprise. Every band I have ever had the good fortune to review has presented me with a new means of viewing the world both through means of macro and micro comprehension. This said I never thought that I would get to revert to my childhood through means of a band review, bless you Gothsicles.
The underlying theme of Gothsicles is the glory that was the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) (God, am I dating myself). These twenty something musicians lead by darkNES have managed to capture the youth and vitality of the outmoded gaming system. In addition to the thematic lyrics The Gothsicles also have managed to add parts of the NES into their performance attire. Then to top the performance perfection off darkNES, who, at least in my opinion, is quite the handsome young man, has managed to create a vocal diaspora which makes him sound like a fourteen year old geek. This in combination with the talents of his varied band members makes Gothsicles a fun and entertaining band.
In September 2006, the Gothsicles released their first full length album. Called NESferatu it is the definitive collection of Gothsicles songs. After hearing just the taste of songs located on their myspace I will be adding this cd to my collection.
With song one they catch your attention and define their humor. I Can Tell That You Shop at Hot(t)Topic is an irreverent look at the obsolete individuality of shopping mall Goths, though not a dig at those who shop at said store, the song is more about the capitalistic need of favored stores to appease to the masses as opposed to their original faithful patrons. One Second Ghost is about the glory of immortality after a Nintendo character death that short few blips of time when you can walk through walls and run through enemies without fear of retribution, ah the power of Nintendo. Konami Code IV appears to be The Gothsicles most famous song, it even has its own belly dance choreography. About one of the most popular Nintendo cheats ever known this song celebrates the driving need for gaming geeks to overpower the games they play. Triple Shot is about the game Galaga, a shooting game where the player has control of up to two ships shooting bugs. This song is about the player gaining a third ship to destroy the pixilated insects and the glory attained by gaining said third ship. The addition of a quote from Monty Python raises both the humor and geek factor making this a song humorous for a wider variety of listeners. But don’t take my word for it if you happen to be in the North Carolina area around October 13th make your way to the Eccentrik Festival (www.eccentrikfestival.com) and enjoy the glorious unconventionalities of new wave goth bands. Take a listen, you won’t be disappointed.
