I must say, I was impressed. Carpe Nocturne does its best to support shows and events to keep this scene and culture alive and growing. However, when we got involved with the DarkStar Festival, although hoping and wishing for the best, the short notice and planning for the event made me wonder if it was something that would actually work out…. I questioned if the Organizer/Promoter, DJ Rob Krush, had enough time to get the word out and let it be known this festival was happening…. Suddenly it was upon us… DarkStar weekend. As I crossed my fingers and readied to head out to the event I heard reports of the remains of a hurricane that was coming up the coast. The entire area was getting coastal flood and high, damaging wind warnings for all day Saturday, the second full day of the event… I thought for sure it would be bust….
I have to hand it to DJ Rob Krush along with his staff, the bands, DJs and especially the attendees; through short notice and hurricane warnings, DarkStar Festival went off without a hitch! In fact, the night the remains of the hurricane was predicted to pass through was the busiest of all 3 nights! The place was PACKED and the night was awesome!
I headed on the 4 hour trek Friday afternoon after meeting with and picking up or new staff photographer Lindsay. Arriving around 5 PM in Stamford we headed in and grabbed our hotel rooms at the Holiday Inn Select which was the festival’s official hotel; really nice place and the people there were great! We took a few minutes to get settled and then headed out on foot to the first venue a few blocks away.
Arriving semi-early at SABATIELLO’S, the venue for the first night, it appeared to be a little slow; but we were early and the night was young. I was happy to bump into a lot of people I knew from the scene in various areas of the Northeast and other’s I’d met at the BlackSun Festival this and last summer. It looked like it would be a good night.
As the evening started DJ Annabel Evil started spinning in the slightly smaller of the two rooms in the venue…. But most important, it was the room with the bar! Annabel did her usually job of spinning great material and beats that got people up and dancing as others we starting to come in the door. Annabel is an awesome DJ and a great choice for starting off the night as her selections surely get the night off to a good start and going in the right direction.
In the second and larger room DJ Ian Fford started spinning what he does best - EBM, Industrial, New Wave, Synthpop, Futurepop, Techno, Trance, Rock, Gothic, Indie. A great mix of each developing killer beats to get people into the room and start moving as they prepared for the upcoming bands. DJ Fford is great at what he does and works hard at bringing the best mixes to the night and getting the party started.
After bouncing between rooms absorbing the great music being spun by DJs Annabell Evil and Ian Fford I wandered into the third and smallest room. This is where the Vendors were set up. The room was small, but just enough room for the number of vendors in attendance with room to visit every table.
Friday night’s vendor’s at DarkStar were: AZSIXEL JEWELRY, VARIANT 13 CLOTHING, MIGHTY MIKE SAGA’S BULLEY BELTS & CANDI KABOOM’S HAIR TREATS!!! There were some awesome products there that night and, best of all, they were being sold by people who truly support and live this culture and lifestyle. If you’re going to purchase products of this type, be sure to support those who support you and your scene rather than the big trendy corporate places that feed of your money and couldn’t care less if this scene lives or dies!
